These portraits of women in midlife - made on direct positive paper with my large format camera - are inspired by words attributed to Julia Margaret Cameron: that no woman should be photographed between the ages of 18 and 70.
I was 48 when I began this work - the same age Cameron was when she was given her first camera - and I am pulling at that thread, finding joy and solidarity with these women while all the time thinking about who gets to be seen.
The project was made possible by the generous support of the Richard and Siobhán Coward Foundation.
